Employment through summer jobs
During the summer, Hämeenaho hires replacement workers by casting a wide net for applicants, from experienced workers to new beginners. The number of applicants for the summer of 2024, as well as people from different backgrounds were key factors in satisfied replacement workers and their supervisors.
Main proportion of the hired employees were placed as operators for different types of machinery in earthworks or factory services, heavy machinery mechanics for our workshop, and operators for the equipment and machines in our stone crushing plants.
“For the summer of 2024, we also hired replacement workers for our supervisors. This enabled our permanent supervisors to take their summer holidays with a more relaxed schedule, and eliminated the need for our employees to cover for each other during the summer. This way we were also able to take on some of the younger people to learn about the industry and our work on the job.”, says Tuija Näppä, HR Manager at Hämeenaho.
Proper orientation and appropriate pay
After Hämeenaho receives an application, the supervisor for the job in question will perform a preliminary screening with Tuija’s assistance. Depending on the experience and wants of the supervisor, the interviews are conducted alone or together with HR.
“The supervisor in charge knows best what the job is like and what it takes to do it. That is why the supervisor our key person during recruitment. Also, this way both the applicant and the supervisor can get an idea on the other’s personality.” says Tuija about the interview situation.
Depending on the job, Hämeenaho sees experience as either a requirement or an advantage for the replacement workers hired for the summer. For some jobs, applicants that have no experience can be hired and trained for the specific task on the job.
The duration of the orientation period is determined by the difficulty level of the job. Regardless of the job description, the work site orientation always includes getting to know both the site and the machinery. In all cases, work safety is always emphasised during orientation.
“For example, due to the transported material and environment of operations, molten dross transport always requires knowledge on what the transporter needs to take into account during the work.”
“The requirement vary according to tasks, but an occupational safety card is a must, and some tasks also require a hot work permit,” Tuija notes on the requirements.
Some of the replacement workers start their work in April and continues until the end of September.
“The duration of the employment largely depends on the situation of the hired worker. The pay is based on the collective agreement of the infrastructural or construction industry, and the education and experience of the hired employee.” Tuija explains.
Good results are rewarded
Hämeenaho is always in need of permanent professionals, and a summer employment is an effective test period for transitioning into a permanent position.
“Some of the replacement workers from last summer are still employed by us, so gaining a permanent employment through a summer job is possible. We need more skilled workers for our production. People, who have gotten experience from either somewhere else or from us through a summer job, are welcome to seek employment from Hämeenaho.”
Tuija Näppä is happy with the recruitment of replacement workers for the summer of 2024.
“I was glad to see the number of applications we received for each task. On average, we interviewed three applicants per job.”
The positive surprise is also reflected on the satisfaction of both Hämeenaho’s summer replacement workers and their supervisors.
“I have gotten good feedback from the hired employees and their supervisors on how well the tasks were taken over and how well the new workers were integrated as a part of our team.” Tuija notes on how well the summer replacement workers were accommodated.
